Introduction To Term 3

Hello! My name is Aljooy Altonsi. I am a student at Emirates International School. As part of MYP design in Term 3, we were assigned to make a booklet about storage devices that is targeted towards children in order to make them understand the concept of storage devices a little more. The booklet would consist of information that would be simple and fun as well as understandable.

Global Context:

Our global context for this unit is Fairness And Development. A question that we have to consider is: What are the consequences of our common humanity? This was also assigned to us: Students will explore rights and responsibilities; the relationship between communities; sharing finite resources with other people and with other living things; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution. The global context was supposed deepen our understanding about the concept of storage devices and how, why, when, where they are used. Other than fairness and development, there are global contexts that are used very frequently. Another global context that could be related to the subject would be Orientation In Space And Time. The question that is to be asked would be:What is the meaning of ‘where’ and ‘when’?. This task would be assigned as well: Students will explore personal histories; homes and journeys; turning points in humankind; discoveries; explorations and migrations of  humankind; the relationships between, and the interconnected-ness of, individuals and civilizations, from personal, local and global perspectives.

ATL Skills:

Information Literacy

To find out information about devices, specifically storage devices, I will need to use my research skills. My research skills include: evaluating my work, orginizing my notes, locating the correct and understandable information and selecting my recources. These skills would definetly help me tremendiously with finding information and about devices and storage devices.

Communication

The booklet we must produce has a meaningful and impactful purpose. It is supposed to serve for a bigger meaning than just a simple display of information. The booklet is meant to educate the students of grade 7 about the storage devices. That bookler would be very helpful to them becuase they have just started MYP Information Technology so they must know alot to proggress. The booklet would be perfect help for them when they must know alot and understand technology.

Storage Devices

1st design (Chosen)

2nd design

Final product

How did you come up with the idea? Did something influence your thinking?           I looked up 'Storage Devices' and grouped up everything until it all came together. I saw a few title pages but I didn't like them, so there was a little inspiration from pages on the internet.

What materials do you think should be used, and why? Are the materials available?
A computer to design the page, access to the internet in order to get the pictures, a printer with colored and black ink to print the design. Yes, the materials were and are already provided.

How could the idea be made?

What tools, equipment and processes would you use?
The idea could be made by looking up the images online and typing out the title. I would use Word Document to make the design.

Could the design be made in the time available and with your skills?
Yes, the design does not take that much effort to create.

Is it safe?
Yes the design is really safe. The only harm that could be done would be a paper cut.

Do you think your client would like the idea?
Yes, it is a very unique and neat design that a client would love.

Why did you choose this colour/texture?
I chose the colors because I think they go very well together and they all look nice on the page design.

Blog Reflection

Do I need to do more research to complete my design? For example, how do I join one part of my design to another?

Yes, I do need more research to complete my desing to make it a bit more interesting. My two desings are very simulare in more than one way so I think I have alreay joined part of my design with the other design.

Does the school have the resources (tools, machinery, hardware, software or materials) to make the design?

Yes, the school has all of the materials I need and even, more so the design I planned turned out to be very successful and perfect to the way I planned it.

Do I have the skills to make this design? Can I gain the skills to make this design?

I do have the skills to make the designs, but at the same time, I have gained a few more skills and progressed most of the skills I already know, such as tracing the paper over the computer to make some of the plan of the design.

Will I have to get any resources myself? If so, where and when?

No, because as I said earlier, all the rescoures were provided by the school.

Will I be able to make this design in the time available?

Yes, becasue the design is super easy and simple and it does not require any extra effort what so ever.

And to ensure that different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other. And to provide a software platform on top of which other programs (i.e., application software) can run.

The spreadsheets that you have created in school are stored on the computer.

Peer Evaluation- Tech Fair

Dannah- Virtual Reality Viewer

The project was a virtual reality viewer which could make you feel like you are actually in the place/ scene. I enjoyed the overall experience and idea of the viewer. To be honest I think that Dannah did really good but she could have painted it and improved on the overall appearance of the viewer to make it a little more appealing or she could have talked about the science behind the viewer and how it works. I really think that her project should be part of the tech fair so other people would experience the feeling.

Marta and Danae- Stop Motion Animation

The project they created was a stop motion called Pixels To Life. I liked their idea of making models of well- known and loved characters from the game Mario, such as Mario and Luigi, from clay, to make it more interesting. They could have added more things to the video to make it longer and better because the video was only a little over a minute long. Unfortunately, I think their project should not be part of the tech fair if the video does not get improved.

Levi and Jaeu- Bamboo Speaker

The project the two created was a speaker made out of bamboo. What they did was they took a bamboo stick, cut slits to make the phone fit through and cut a slit in the bottom to let the phone charge while it was still physically in the speaker.I liked how the speaker enhanced the sound, making it louder as the demonstration showed. I think they could improve by maybe adding a few designs or colours to make the speaker more appealing. I think their project should be part of the each fair because the bamboo speaker is a very easy and cheep thing to make and enjoy.

George, Selahattin and Salah- Digital Camera

The group made a digital camera using only parts such as a Raspberry Pi. I liked how they demonstrated it and made it look presentable and interesting. I think they could improve on explaining it and their process by perhaps creating a detailed PowerPoint presentation. I think that their project should be part of the tech fair.

Selin- Childhood Video

Selin did a video about her childhood and the places she has visited when she was younger. I liked the idea of creating the video and the pictures she included. I think she could improve mainly on the video's production and maybe add a little more information about the places she visited. I honestly think that her project shouldn't be in the tech fair.

Lakshita- Robotic snake

Lakshita made a robotic snake that could move, turn, and attack. All the actions could be controlled using an iPad. I liked how she showed the snake by doing a demonstration. I think she could improve by trying to add a little more information and detail to her PowerPoint. I think that her project should be part of the tech fair so other people could see the amazing robot creation.

Adam, Saad, Ryan- Lego car

The group made a presentation about a Lego car that could be controlled and moved by a certain software. I liked the idea of the car and the idea of it being able to move. I think they could improve by maybe building the project and showing us how it can move. I don't think their project should be part of the tech fair because they did not build the project, they made a simple and un-detailed PowerPoint about it.

Alicia, Amira- Candle Powered Fan

Alicia and Amira made a candle powered fan that could work by having a sensor sense the flame made by the candle and the sensor sends signals to the motor so the motor could work and make the fan work. I liked the idea of the fan being recyclable and active. I think they could improve by adding more detail to the PowerPoint. I think that their project is worthy of being part of the tech fair.

Katie, Anna, Ziad- Solar Pannel

The group made a solar panel that could be built using a kit. The solar panel could change into different shapes to make things that would be cute or cool. I liked how they put together the website and I also like the idea of different shapes in general. I think they could improve by somehow being able to demonstrate the project and its function. I think that their project should be part of the tech fair.

Criteria C- Creating the solution

Reflection:

So far, I have made part of the video, but I have a few more parts to finish. The biggest challenge I have faced was time. It takes a really long time to take a picture of each shot a couple of times and also cut out the things needed to complete the video. I have enjoyed a few things about the project but I think I would be satisfied with my final product more than the actual process. I there was a next time, I would try to manage my time more wisely and spend more time on it to make it better overall.
