Criteria A – Inquiry and Analysing

3D Design and modelling- Inquiry and analyzing

Johannes Gutenberg was a German goldsmith that invented a printing press in the 1450s. The first book he ever printed was a bible that was in the Latin language in the year 1454. He was born in the year of 1398 and passed away at the year 1468 aged 70.

Types of printers:

Any printer, such as a laser printer, ink-jetprinter, LED page printer, that prints without striking the paper, unlike a dot matrix printer which hits the paper with small pins. Non-impact printers are quieter than impact printers, and also faster due the lack of moving parts in the print head.

Main Printers

Dot-matrix printer- Impact Printer
Produces characters and illustrations by striking pins against an ink ribbon to print closely spaced dots in the appropriate shape. Dot matrix is a 2-dimensional patterned array, used to represent characters, symbols and images. Every type of modern technology uses dot matrixes for display of information, including cell phones, televisions, and printers.

Ink jet printer-  Non-Impact Printer

Works by spraying ionized ink at a sheet of paper. Magnetized plates in the ink's path direct the ink onto the paper in the desired shapes. This printer also contains ink cartridges that are to be replaced when empty. The ink cartridges can be bought in many stores.

Laser Printer-Non-Impact Printer:
A type of printer that utilizes a laser beam to produce an image on a drum. The printer basically uses a laser to print images on something. For the printing to be done a laser system is used. The diagram below shows the laser system.

Thermal printer-  Impact Printer

Is a type of printer that produces a printed image by selectively heating coated thermo chronic paper,so the coating turns black in the areas where it is heated which then produce an image. Things such as receipts and instruction manuals are printed using this type of printer. These printers are easy to buy. A roll of paper is placed in this printer to print on.

All-in-one printer- Impact Printer

A printer that can do scanning fax and make copies. That way you can do three things with one machine. All-in-one printers are the most convenient for most. This printer is both suitable for work and home pleasures.

3D printer- Impact Printer
Prints 3D objects using a software to design the model. Almost everything can be printed using this printer such as plastic limbs and guns. There are many materials that can be used when 3D printing. Materials such as ABS plastic, PLA, polyamide (nylon), glass filled polyamide, stereolithography materials (epoxy resins), silver, titanium, steel, wax, photopolymers and polycarbonate.

Wireless printer- Impact Printer or Non-impact-

Can be connected to by WiFi or Bluetooth. It is one of the most convenient printers because there is no cord and can be connected by wireless. This printer is very easy to use because of the lack of cords. All that is to be done is to connect it to your device to the printer by wireless and click 'Print'.

Photo printer- Non-Impact Printer

Is a type of printer use for printing photographs. Can print H-D quality photos. It can also print in colour/black and white. Here is an example of the printer below.

Dye-Sublimation Printer- Impact Printer-
Is a type of printer which employs a printing process that uses heat to transfer dye to a medium such as a plastic card, printer paper or poster paper. Things such as T-shirts can be printed using this printer. There is a special ink to be used for printing. Here is an example of the ink below.

3D Printing

What is 3D printing?
-3D Printing is the process of making a virtual design of an object a person would like to create.

How does 3D printing work?

-It starts with making a virtual design of the object a person wants to create. This virtual design is made in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file using a 3D modeling program (for the creation of a totally new object) or with the use of a 3D scanner (to copy an existing object).
What is the technology behind 3D printing?

First, 3D printer owners choose between a type and colour of plastic. A gear pulls the piece of filament through the print head. Just before it is extruded by the pointed nozzle, the filament passes through a heated tube and liquefies the plastic. The plastic solidifies quickly, sealing together layers. 3D printing is additive manufacturing. That means the plastic is built up one layer at a time.

Where would you find 3D printers?
There are stores worldwide were you can print things in 3D. It is not too expensive and not too cheap. You can design any designs and you can print them in stores.

Exploring TinkerCAD Creations

Lesson 1:Learning the moves.
The main objective of the lesson is to learn the by moving a slender shape and learning how to move it in order to do other lessons.

What I had to do was move a slender shape and put it on top of another shape.

The components were two slender- looking shapes and a pole.

Lesson 2: Camera Controls.
The main objective of the lesson is to learn how to zoom in and learn the camera control.

I had to move around the camera in different points of view and look who's behind the curtain..

The components were a stage,a curtain and a figure that looked like Elvis.

Lesson 3:Creating holes result.
The main objective of the lesson is to learn how to make a hole in a shape.

I had to make a hole in the other side of the wrench.

The components were a wrench an a hexagon to poke a hole in.

Making TinkerCAD Creations

Object 1

Reflection:
I think I have done an exceptionally well job with this object. I have used a triangular prism, heart, star, 3 cylinders and two rectangles. To improve I think I should have made the triangular prism closer.

Object 2

Reflection:
I think I have done a very good job with the second object. I have used a cylinder, tube, paraboloid, torus thick, sphere, pyramid and a round roof. To improve I think I should have spread the round roof a little more.

Design situation:

Hello! My name is Aljooy. I am a student in Emirates International School. As part of my MYP design in Term 1, I am using the computer software TinkerCAD to design a 3D object. The software helps develop, create, and print 3D objects with the technology we have today. So I have decided to do a temple in 3D. I have decided to do a 3D temple because the complex architecture is really inspiring.

This is the design that inspired me. The problem with this one is that the pillars are misplaced. My design would have the pillars in the right place and another layer of ground on the bottom.
